A6 booklets: page counts, paper and the jobs they suit

By the multi-pages.com team · 20 October 2026

Two A6 portrait city guide booklets held in one hand, showing the pocket size of the format
A6 is the format people keep: it fits a hand, a jacket pocket or a product box.

An A6 booklet measures 105 × 148 mm, a quarter of an A4 sheet. It works best between 8 and 60 inside pages, saddle-stitched, on 90 to 130 gsm paper with a body text of 9 to 10 pt. Past roughly 48 pages you choose between staples and a glued spine, and that choice changes the price far more than the paper does.

Below: the page counts each binding accepts, the papers and type sizes that work at this size, file set-up, and real prices noted in our configurator on 20 October 2026.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Size: A6 portrait is 105 × 148 mm; landscape is 148 × 105 mm. Add 3 mm bleed on every edge.
  • Page counts: always a multiple of 4. Online, saddle-stitched A6 runs from 8 to 32 pages self-cover, or 8 to 60 inside pages plus a cover; perfect binding runs from 44 to 120 inside pages.
  • Paper: 90 gsm uncoated for text-heavy booklets and forms, 130 gsm matt for mixed text and photos, a 250 gsm laminated cover when the booklet will be carried around.
  • Readability: body text at 9–10 pt, one column, at least 10 mm of margin on the spine side.
  • Price: a 16-page A6 booklet (130 gsm matt, self-cover) costs €151 excl. VAT for 500 copies; at 48 pages, staples cost about a third of a glued spine.
  • Files: single pages in reading order, 300 dpi images, fonts embedded; creep is compensated by us at imposition.

What is an A6 booklet?

An A6 booklet is a bound document whose trimmed pages measure 105 × 148 mm, the A6 size defined by ISO 216. Each A-size is the previous one cut in half, so one A6 page is half an A5 page and a quarter of an A4 page.

In practice the format comes in two orientations:

A6 is not the pocket book format: our pocket-sized book uses a taller 110 × 180 mm page for long texts. A6 suits documents that are consulted rather than read cover to cover.

Scale drawing of A4, A5 and A6 paper sizes nested inside each other, with A6 portrait 105 × 148 mm and landscape 148 × 105 mm
A4, A5 and A6 to the same scale: an A6 page is a quarter of A4.

How many pages can an A6 booklet have?

An A6 booklet always has a page count that is a multiple of 4, because every folded sheet carries four pages. For ordering online, saddle-stitched A6 runs from 8 to 32 pages without a separate cover and from 8 to 60 inside pages with a cover; perfect-bound A6 runs from 44 to 120 inside pages.

Two definitions avoid most misunderstandings:

The ceiling depends on the paper, because thicker sheets make the booklet bulge at the fold:

Perfect bound90 gsm uncoated, 130 or 170 gsm matt or gloss250 or 300 gsm, matt or gloss44 to 120

A6 landscape follows the same logic with lower ceilings: 8 to 32 pages self-cover and up to 44 inside pages with a cover, because the short spine holds fewer sheets securely.

If your content lands on an awkward number, plan the spare pages (notes, a map, an index) rather than leaving them blank. For the reasoning behind the multiple-of-4 rule, see our article on saddle stitch page counts.

Bar chart of A6 booklet page ranges: saddle-stitched self-cover 8 to 32, with cover 8 to 48 or 8 to 60, perfect bound 44 to 120
Between 44 and 60 inside pages, both bindings are possible: that is where the binding decision is made.

Saddle-stitched or perfect bound: which binding suits A6?

Saddle stitching suits most A6 booklets: it is the most economical binding, it opens flatter, and it covers everything up to 60 inside pages. Perfect binding is worth it when you need more than 60 pages, a printable spine or a book-like object that will be shelved.

In the overlap zone, 44 to 60 inside pages, cost settles the question. For 48 inside pages on 90 gsm uncoated paper with a matt-laminated cover:

At 500 copies, that is €0.71 per copy against €2.34. Perfect binding at A6 is also dearer than at A5: the same 48-page perfect-bound booklet costs €1,006 excl. VAT for 500 copies in A5. Small formats are slower to handle on a binding line, and the price reflects it.

Perfect binding is the right call for A6 book printing when the text runs beyond 60 inside pages, when the booklet must stand on a shelf with a title on its spine, or when it should feel like a book rather than a brochure. Bear in mind that a 44 to 60-page A6 on 90 gsm paper produces a thin spine, only a few millimetres wide, so spine text must stay small and simple. Our spine thickness calculator gives the exact width for your page count and paper. Wire-O, loop stitching and hardcover are also listed on the A6 product page as options on request. Which paper and weight should you choose for an A6 booklet?

For most A6 booklets, 90 gsm uncoated paper suits text-led documents and 130 gsm matt coated paper suits documents mixing text and photos. Add a 250 gsm laminated cover whenever the booklet will travel in a pocket or bag.

At A6 size, three practical properties matter:

170 gsm matt or glossStiff, substantialShort premium booklets (8 to 16 pages), menusPages spring open at A6; fewer pages possible

Paper weight barely moves the price. For a 16-page self-cover A6 booklet at 500 copies, our configurator shows €142 excl. VAT on 90 gsm uncoated, €151 on 130 gsm matt and €158 on 170 gsm matt. Choose for the reader.

For the cover, 250 gsm board with lamination suits anything handled repeatedly: matt for a velvety surface with no reflections, gloss for vivid colours, soft-touch for a suede-like feel. A 170 gsm cover is enough for a one-day programme.

Is text readable at A6? Type size, margins and layout

Text is perfectly readable at A6 if you set body copy at 9 to 10 pt with generous line spacing, use a single column and keep at least 10 mm of margin on the spine side. Most A6 booklets that feel cramped simply copied an A4 or A5 layout and scaled it down.

An A6 portrait page leaves a text block about 75 to 80 mm wide: one column of 40 to 55 characters per line, a comfortable reading length. Two columns would give lines of about 20 characters.

Recommended settings for an A6 portrait page:

Crop photos tighter than you would in A5, and keep tables to three or four columns. For broader layout advice on brochures and booklets, see our guide to brochure and booklet presentation.

What jobs suit an A6 booklet?

A6 booklets suit documents that are carried, kept or handed over: event programmes, visitor guides, product instructions, training booklets, recipe booklets, pocket catalogues and menus. They are less suited to dense technical content, large tables or image-led sales presentations, which need A5 or A4.

When the content outgrows A6 (detailed maps, product photography, multi-column price grids), move up one size rather than shrinking type: our A5 booklet printing page gives the equivalent options.

How much does A6 booklet printing cost?

A 16-page A6 booklet, saddle-stitched on 130 gsm matt paper without a separate cover, costs €113 excl. VAT for 100 copies and €230 excl. VAT for 1,000 copies in our configurator on 20 October 2026. Page count and binding drive the price; paper weight changes it only slightly.

Three patterns stand out:

Online, A6 saddle-stitched booklets start at 100 copies and perfect-bound ones at 250, up to 2,500 copies; other runs are priced on request. The configurator can also display pounds sterling. Prices move with paper costs, so the A6 booklet printing page with online prices remains the reference. To understand each component of the total, read how your price is built.

How do you prepare files for an A6 booklet?

Supply a PDF of single A6 pages in reading order, at 105 × 148 mm plus 3 mm bleed on every edge, with images at 300 dpi, CMYK colours and embedded fonts. We impose the pages ourselves and compensate for creep on saddle-stitched booklets.

The details that matter at A6:

Before ordering, you can run your file through our free PDF checker, which flags page size, bleed and resolution problems. Every file is also checked by our prepress team before printing. For the general export settings (PDF/X, colour profiles, transparency), see how to prepare your PDF for printing.

Common mistakes with A6 booklets, and a checklist before you order

The most frequent A6 mistakes are a page count that is not a multiple of 4, text shrunk from a larger layout, content too close to the spine, and perfect binding where staples would do.

Checklist before you order your A6 booklets:

  1. Format chosen: portrait 105 × 148 mm or landscape 148 × 105 mm.
  2. Page count is a multiple of 4, and you know whether it is self-cover or plus cover.
  3. Binding matches the page count: saddle-stitched up to 60 inside pages, perfect bound from 44.
  4. Inside paper chosen for the use: uncoated for text and writing, matt coated for photos.
  5. Cover weight and finish decided: 170 gsm for short-lived documents, 250 or 300 gsm laminated for documents that travel.
  6. Body text at 9 to 10 pt, single column, nothing important under 7 pt.
  7. 3 mm bleed on every edge, 5 mm safe zone, 10 to 12 mm or more on the spine side.
  8. Images at 300 dpi, CMYK, fonts embedded, single pages in reading order; spine width calculated if perfect bound.
  9. Quantity priced at the next tier up as well, in case it costs only a little more.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an A6 booklet?

105 × 148 mm in portrait, or 148 × 105 mm in landscape, once trimmed. With 3 mm bleed, each page of the file measures 111 × 154 mm.

How many pages can an A6 booklet have?

Always a multiple of 4: online, 8 to 32 pages self-cover, 8 to 60 inside pages plus a cover when saddle-stitched, and 44 to 120 inside pages when perfect bound.

Can an A6 booklet be perfect bound?

Yes, from 44 inside pages. Up to 60 pages, saddle stitching is usually better value: at 48 inside pages and 500 copies, €355 excl. VAT stapled against €1,169 excl. VAT perfect bound (20 October 2026).

Which paper weight is best for an A6 booklet?

90 gsm uncoated for text and writing, 130 gsm matt coated for text with photos, and a 250 gsm laminated cover for booklets carried around.

What font size should I use in an A6 booklet?

9 to 10 pt for body text, in one column, with small print no smaller than 7 pt.

What is the minimum order for A6 booklets?

Online, 100 copies for saddle-stitched A6 and 250 copies for perfect-bound A6, up to 2,500 copies. Other quantities are priced on request.

Is an A6 booklet the same as a pocket book?

Not quite. A6 suits documents that are consulted; long texts read cover to cover usually go into a taller pocket book format such as 110 × 180 mm, perfect bound.
